Leah jumped off of the wall when the man hit the ground. She could not see what was happening as the villagers had crowded around the man and the hound. Reaching the crowd, she demanded to be let through. The crowd parted under the authority of her voice. The man lay still as a stone, his face half buried in the sod. His body was contorted and silent. The hound stood panting over him. Leah approached the body forthrightly, her staff hung low ready for striking. She circled around and stood next to the hound patting its heaving sides. She watched the body long enough to see that the man was breathing and unconscious. She stepped toward him and several gasps escaped the throats of some villagers. The fisted end of her staff hovered over the man's head. Everyone grew very still. Leah moved the fist to the far side of the man's head and gently pulled his face up from the sod. A wash of blood crossed his brow and cheek. Without looking up Leah's voice broke the awful silence.
